[net.sport.baseball] Baseball after August 5, 1985

ogre@whuts.UUCP (LOCOCO) (08/05/85)

Yesterday, on the celebration of Phil Rizzuto Day, at Yankee Stadium,
one of two lifetime records was established. I watch with mixed emotions,
since I'm a Yankee fan, as Tom (Terrific) Seaver pitched his way to
his 300th lifetime victory. I remember the gentleman as a Met, starting
way back in 1967, the World Series in 1969(which I attended the final game),
and other facets of his illustrious career. Congratulations Tom! I also
congratulate the other lifetime record of 3000 hits set by Rod Carew.
It seemed kind of ironic: Tom pitching 300 in New York, and Rod getting
3000 against his old teammates(Twins).

Now for the point: Mr. Ueberoth, as an avid baseball fan, I beseech you to
come through with your claim, that this is the year of the record. Just
having Tom come through with 300 and Rod with 3000 is not enough. We need
for example, Pete exceeding Ty Cobb, Phil getting his 300th, and newcomer
Joe Baseball starting his lifetime feats. Get with it or this will be my
final word about baseball in 1985. It's kind of a cheap way of cheating the
first Canadian team to win some kind of a championship, whatever they might
achieve. This is my prayer as I leave for today, that I may awake tomorrow
knowing that there is no strike, and that the Yankees might have a chance
to chase that Canadian team.

Amen.
