It was a thrill listening to the play by play of Tom Seaver's 300th win
on Sunday as I was driving home from Wisconsin. In my opinion, Tom Seaver
is not only a terrific pitcher, but a great man as well; a good example
of a fine family man with his priorities in the right order, and certainly hero-material for kids. Way to go, Tom Terrific!

Rod Carew gets his 3000th hit on Sunday. Whew, quite a high point for MLB,
and now a probable low point just hours away. He became only the 16th
player in MLB history to collect 3000 hits, and he did it the Rod Carew way,
hitting an outside pitch to the opposite field. His best year was '77,
when he flirted with .400 for most of the season. Sports Illustrated did
a cover story of him that year with Ted Williams. Carew is quiet and has
either played for a championship caliber team that wasn't a media center
(Minnesota Twins, who won a number of Western Division championships in
the early '70's) or a team that had players (Reggie) that (media-wise) would
overshadow him (California Angels). Congrats to Rod Carew!

Rod Carew about two weeks ago talked about hitting #3000 on the road,
he thought would be ok, except he hoped it wasn't in Canada.
Maybe he was joking and maybe he wasn't, I don't know but
the Herald-Tribune (the Califonia paper i think) and it was
mentioned in the Toronto paper (Carew inults Canada).
Now apparently Carew said it was a joke, but he is't talking to
the media anymore. I do feel a bit insulted, much because
Canada has had its role to play in baseball, there are a few Canadians
in the Hall of Fame. Babe Ruth hit his first home run in Toronto in the
International league and the two International league teams in Toronto
and Montreal have seen there fair share of major league talent.
