YOUR MESSAGE This is it, I can't stand it anymore, I just have to know what other people think of Jim Freys' managing. I just got through watching the Cubs lose 6-4 to the Mets and there were at least three managerial decisions that I thought were terrible. No. 1 It was the top of the sixth (I believe) the Cubs had just taken the lead 4-3 on Keith Morelands solo homer. One out later, Jody Davis singles, takes second on Ceys' ground out and third on a wild pitch. Bowa grounds to th second baseman for the second out, Davis holds at third. The pitcher is now up, the Cubs have the no. 1 & 2 pinch hitters in the league on their bench, both are lefties, and the Mets have a right handed pitcher. Meridith, the Cubs current pitcher, has not been overly effective. Why doesn't Frey send up Bosley or Hebner to hit for Meridith????? (As it turned out Meridith gave up the tying run in the bottom of the inning.) No. 2 A couple innings later with the score tied and two outs, the Mets pitcher singles. Frey then decides to have Durham hold the pitcher at first instead of having him play his normal first base position. The next batter promptly singles through the hole left by Durham holding the runner on first. This eventually leads to the Mets go ahead run. Is it normal for the first baseman to hold the runner at first in this situation? I just can't believe the pitcher was that much of a threat to steal. Comments? No. 3 In the top of the eighth, with two outs, Frey sends up Hebner to hit for Bowa, the no. 8 hitter in the Cubs lineup. Hebner makes the third out of the inning and Frey replaces Hebner with Chris Speier, the Cubs backup shortstop. My question is: Why didn't Frey replace the current pitcher with Speier and replace Hebner with Lee Smith. That way Speier would lead off the ninth and the Cubs would have Smith in the game to prevent the Mets from scoring anymore runs. The way Frey did it, the Cubs had to use another pinch hitter in the top of the ninth, AND the Mets scored a run off the relief pitcher that Frey left in the game. AUGHHHHHHHHHH!!! I just can't take much more of this, could someone who saw the game please comment on these decisions. I'd like to know that I'm not the only one who thinks Jim Frey is a terrible manager.
