[net.sport.baseball] Is it LIVE? or...

roy@hpmtla.UUCP (roy) (07/30/85)

Here's one for you all. While watching the Monday night Mets-Expos
game on ABC, I flipped over to ESPN after the 8th inning to
catch a little Sports Center. To my surprise, they announced the
final score of the game and showed highlights of Tim Wallach's
9th inning homer. I then flipped back to ABC to watch the conclusion
of this LIVE telecast (don't worry, it ended the same way).
Is this due to my time zone?
Is it due to my local station?
Is this delay normal for ABC?
Was this the case on the east coast?
How long was the delay?
Couldn't they have edited out everything Howard said by the time it got to me???

I could become a gambler with information like this, but, its hardly
gambling!

Here on the left coast, (or at least in Oregon), the games are
broadcast at 8:00 pm. For games like the Mets-Expos, common sense
says that the game must be taped. Of course, the Mets have shown
a history of *late* games :-) What bugs me is the fact that West
coast games, like one they showed at Oakland, are also taped.
At least I assume so, since I know it can't be light in Oakland
	when it's dark in Portland.

Speaking of Howard, has anyone else noticed that he seems to be
showing his age? Not just in the commentary that is straight out
of the 30's and 40's. A few weeks ago, he interviewed Lasorda about
Steve Howe, and I thought I saw quite a palsy shake in his hands.
Also, he seems to be getting quite rude to Al and Jim - down to
the nasty remarks he makes about Palmer's pitching.

I don't know about Loveland, CO (in Mountain time zone) but on the west
coast, ABC has a policy that _all_ Monday night games are delayed _unless_
one of the teams playing is from the west coast. In this case it will be
shown live in that team's home city (or market) and will still be delayed
everywhere else on the west coast. It is interesting to note that this
is not true for Monday night football.

The question was about network games not being shown live on the left coast.
Whenever a game is on ABC, on Monday Night, here on the right coast it
starts at 8:15, which would be 5:15 on the left. Presumably the networks
like to show them in prime time, rather than at 5:15, so yes, I think it's
safe to say that you on the left see them on tape.

What do you want? Wicker?

Here in the mountain time zone, the Monday Night Baseball
games are delayed one hour - the games start at 8:00 eastern, and 7:00 here.

I first noticed this a couple of years ago watching a game played in
Detroit. There was a clock in the outfield, which was only one
hour ahead. I do wonder how ABC can get away with saying the game is
"live".

Unfortunately, KATU TV, (the local (Portland) ABC affiliate) in its
infinite wisdom, does indeed tape-delay Monday night football by an hour,
so that it airs at 7pm rather than 6pm. Most football fans I've talked to
don't like it, but KATU seems not to care. I believe that KOMO in Seattle
also does this. Can anyone in Seattle confirm this? Do they do it even
when the Seahawks are playing on MNF?

Other than watching a game that the rest of the country already knows
the result of, my options seen to be:
 - don't watch
 - listen to the game on the radio
 - tape the game, and watch it at my own convenience
 - get a strong enough TV antenna to pick up the Eugene ABC affiliate ~100
	miles to the south

Yes, KOMO does delay all MNF games *except* when the Seahawks are playing,
then they are live.

I watched part (most of the third and some of the fourth quarters) of the
49er - Bronco game last night. I was very surprised that Elway played
well into the third qtr. In fact it seemed that both teams used more of their
regulars longer than usual for only the second preseason game.

Anybody have any theories as to why?
