[net.sport.baseball] Pitcher as MVP?

       > Gooden is an absolute marvel ( 20-3, in two of his three losses,

I think a list of MVP candidates could be drawn up from the following:

Pretend that each player is replaced with an average player at the same
position. Estimate how much difference in Wins and Losses would result.
MVP candidates would have the largest positive effect.

Now, Gooden is 20-4 as of now. An average pitcher with the Met offense
would be about 13-11 (???). So Dwight is about 7 games to the good.
That strikes me as a lot of games. I find it hard to believe that any
of the other candidates makes much more than a 7 game difference.
I think pitchers can be MVPs, Dwight is a legitimate candidate, the Mets
best, and might just win it if the Mets overtake the Redbirds.
There is no way a pinch hitter makes a 7 game difference.

As of today, I'd choose Guerrero. He's got the best bat in the league,
his team is winning and started doing so when he started hitting.
And his low RBI total? Yeah, that dampens my enthusiam. It could
be due to the rest of the team not being on base, or his hitting with
men on base. But even if it's the latter, the Dodgers just keep on winning.

Pedro's low RBI totals ARE because of the few Dodgers
on base. How can he hit 32 homers and hit .322 and not lead
the RBI count. As a matter of fact, I think he's sixth or
something. That's ridiculous. But it's not his fault. His
slugging percentage and OBA are also excellent.

Usually the guys who hit for average hit 20-25 homers tops.
Only Brett comes to mind as an average (batting average that
is) hitter with some sock. Guerrero is the definite MVP of
     this year.

Mattingly is the definite MVP of the AL. The only
reason the Yankees are contending this year is because of
their offense. Young Don is the best hitter for the Yanks.
     Talk about an RBI animal!

I'm sick of hearing how these multimillionaire
players give twenty tickets to underpriveleged kids and so
forth. That's like the NY Times telling how I donated three
dollars to Muscular Dystrophy. Eddie Murray not only gives
50 seats to each game, he donated $500,000 to some charity.
Half a million bucks! That's a class, class move. He's
worth every penny of the 2.6 mill a year he'll get from now on.
Even though he gets a lot of respect, he's still an
     underrated ballplayer.

Nobody will beat the DODGERS this year. World Series rings
are a couple of months away. Now with Madlock at third, ouch!

The Yankees are contending not just because of their hitting, take
a look at the team pitchings stats some time as well, you'll see
that they are 3rd in the League (or so).

Ron Guidry for AL Cy Young!

Maybe they'll want one of your women to experiment on, perhaps
I shall take this one to them!
