[net.sport.baseball] Willie McGee---MVP

michaelf@ISM780.UUCP (09/17/85)

I think Guerrero is a leading candidate for MVP (he's got my vote)
but I think everyone is overlooking the other man wo definitely has the
numbers--- Willie McGee. His stats are incredible this year and he's
on a contending team (the Cards will win the East).

		    McGee NL Rank

		    Average .361 1st
		    Runs 100 3rd (8 behind the leader)
		    Hits 189 1st
		    Triples 16 1st
		    Steals 45 5th

	    That's candidacy.

I agree that McGee has a strong candidacy as MVP. However, I believe
the "Hits" stat has no relevance; the average is what really matters.
McGee may have the edge in total hits because of his position in the
lineup: number 2, so he gets more at bats. Still, a player should
obviously have a substantial number of at bats to be considered. Thus,
rating vis-a-vis MVP should be determined by a batting averages of
players with at least n at bats. It should also be noted that the "Runs"
stat is due to two major factors: 1) steals getting him into
scoring position. 2) Tom Herr and Jack Clark.
McGee's average, though, is fantastic and should weigh heavily.
Another stat that was left out is RBI's. i don't know off hand how many
he has, but I believe its 70-80, which is pretty good for a number 2 man
in the lineup.
One last point about McGee: his fielding abilities. He is a great defensive
player, covering great ranges, etc.
Chuck Tanner was quoted this week as saying McGee is the best player in the
league right now both offensively and defensively. Considering Tanner gets
beaten by everyone, McGee must have made an extra special impression. :-)

P.S. I really know little about Guerrero(sp?). Anyone have any info. on
     his defense this year?
