At any rate, my first reaction was: They'd better not trade Winfield for anybody. The next day in the Globe, Peter Gammons squashed the rumor and then went overboard by saying that the Sox wouldn't trade Gedman for Winfield even-up. I'd love to debate Gammons on this in a fair forum, the guy gets away with so much crap, but the Globe only rarely prints negative sports letters and then only when the situation gets out of hand (ie. ML Carr's thuggery). I do give Gedman a lot of credit; he has emerged as one of the top catchers in the AL, but Gammons immediately vaults him to number one property catcher in baseball, quotes an unknown source bestowing Gedman the "Best Arm Award" and does nothing to discount the effect Fenway Park has on his offensive totals. Regarding the value of Rich Gedman vs. Dave Winfield: First of all, from the Red Sox viewpoint, a trade of Gedman and Evans for Winfield would be terrible. Gedman is one of the better catchers in the game, and is getting better. Evans is still a good outfielder, even if his offense is inconsistent. The Red Sox would have better offense from Winfield than Evans, but additional offensive production in the outfield is the last thing the Red Sox need. Secondly, they would be minus a very good young catcher, with no real prospects of a replacement. Taking this one step further I do not think it would be wise to trade Gedman for Winfield even-up. Unless they were to turn around and make an additional deal involving an outfielder. Given their current outfield of Rice, Evans, Armas (plus rookie Steve Lyons), what would you do with Winfield? Bench Evans (multiple gold glove, great On base average, good power), or Armas (last years AL home run champ)? Certainly not Rice. I am not attempting to say that over all, Gedman is a more valuable player than Winfield. But given the makeup of the current Red Sox team, I think that given the opportunity to trade Gedman for Winfield, they should keep Gedman. What the Red Sox need, of course, is pitching. Now Gedman for Dwight Gooden.............. Mark Bryant AT&T Information Systems Labs, Denver CO {ihnp4} druxq!markb
