Races at a glance (as of end of play 9/24): AL East: Toronto New York 7 Two weeks ago, before the start of the 4-game Yanks/Jays series in NY, before the Yanks played Detroit or Baltimore, we said that the Yankees had peaked too soon, and that the Blue Jays were due to reverse trends and widen their lead. Nuf said about this race. AL Worst California Kansas City 1/2 Chicago 6 1/2 Two weeks ago, I thought KC would pull away. I underestimated the Angels, I guess. Gosh, have I underestimated the White Sox too? Does anybody want to win this division? Does anybody care? NL East St Louis New York 3 At the start of the season, everyone felt that 100 games would have to be won in order to win this title. Everyone was right. But everyone thought that it would be between the Mets and the Cubs. (Say, where are the Cubs, anyway? I can't find them in the standings. Am I looking down far enough?) The Cardinals have won 12 out of their last 13; they're due to cool down over the next 11. Can the Mets get hot? Two weeks ago we said that this race would go down to the final weekend and we stand by that! NL Worst Los Angeles Cincinatti 6 The Dodgers' great pitching managed to pull Pete's Reds back into the race, to within 4 1/2 games at one point. Were this not the Dodgers, we'd say this race is over. Stay tuned! raf ---
