[net.sport.baseball] Gooden's shutout streak

rokhsar@lasspvax.UUCP (Dan Rokhsar) (09/22/85)

Gooden has stretched his earned-run-less streak to 39 innings with Saturday's
win over Pittsburgh, breaking the Met team record. What is the National
League record? Major League record? What is the lowest ERA recorded by
a pitcher with 200 or more innings?

Before 1985:

NL Don Drysdale (?)
AL Walter Johnson (56)

Lowest ERA Bob Gibson 1.12

After 1985??????

Not true technically (there were other, lower ERA's) but true in
spirit (the other performances were all pre-1920).

I don't think the statistic is kept for earned-run-less streaks.
The record scoreless streak (i.e. no runs of any kind) is 58 2/3
by Don Drysdale. Unfortunately, Mookie Wilson dropped a fly ball
in the first inning of that game with Pittsburgh, allowing an
unearned run to score. This is the only run Gooden has allowed
in the streak (now at 48 innings, after today's victory over the
Cubs).
