[net.sport.baseball] AL MVP - Gotta Be ..

Wade Boggs!! I don`t care if the Bosox disappointed me again,
his year is just tremendous. He`s the guy I`d want on my team.
Over 225 hits - nobody is close in the AL ( Mattingly has 194 as
of Sunday) Most of any major leaguer since 1980. Even if McGee
was in the AL, he`d STILL be 15 points back! Batting .374,
about to take his 2nd batting title, he made a potential race
between himself, Brett and Mattingly into a runaway. Can he help
it that Boston`s pitching still needs help? Carlton won the MVP
when he won 27 for the lowly Phils in the early 70s. I`d compare
that to Wade`s situation. Not much press cause Boston`s out of
it. You know, if any current young player show potential to break
Rose`s record, Boggs sure does. Yankee/Mattingly fan comments welcome.

You baited me and here's my response:

Wade Boggs, I agree is a tremendous hitter, but consider where he is playing.
Mattingly, when he visited the Beanbox on the last trip, tattooed the Green
Monster. The Yankees, as well, are desperate for good starting pitching, and
Don has managed to combine his run production (RBI's, respectable AVG, HR's,
and run prevention {fielding}) to keep the Yankees as close as he could.
Now as the season winds its way down to the last few games, the cream from
the east (this year), has made its way to the top (Blue Jays). We'll have to
see the last 2 weeks yet, and then make a final judgement for the top
candidate for MVP.

In defense of your comments, maybe the Yankees should make a trade for Boggs;
but I wouldn't want to see them give up Mattingly.

PITCHING IS THE NAME OF THE GAME. ...what's left but strength up the middle!

I don't thimk so. Boggs is 27 and has about 750 hits. He would have
to average 250 hits a year until he is 40 just to get to 4000.
Unfortunately, he was 25 years old in his first full season.
Tim Raines is 25 and would have to average about 210 hits until he is 40.
Cal Ripken, now 24, would have to average 200.

The best chance belongs to Robin Yount who is 29 and will get
his 2000th hit next year. If he can average 190 hits for the next 11 years,
he will get to 4000. One of the necessary elements in breaking a record
like Rose's (or Aaron's) is a very early start (Yount came up at the age of 17)
or a late finish.

I don't think Wade Boggs has ever below .335!
Can any Bosox fans confirm this?
