Hello, I have not seen this brought up yet on the net, but I would like to put in my vote for Comeback Player of the Year in the AL. My vote goes to the Chicago White Sox pitcher Britt Burns. Britt has gone from a 4-12 won lost record in 1984 to an 18-10 record so far this year, with two more starts to go. If he can win both of his remaining starts, it would be the first time in his career that he has won 20. Considering the team he is on (presently third in the AL West), and his previous two years (he was something like 10-10 in 1983, the White Sox divisional championship year) and his present record makes him a good candidate for the award. As far as AL Rookie of the Year for 1985, nobody seems to stand out in my little mind. It is quite possible (more like probable) that a more deserving rookie in the AL should win the award, but I will stick out my neck anyway and vote for Ozzie Guillen, shortstop for the Chicago White Sox. (Are my pale hose showing?) His stats are .270 BA (2nd among Chi-Sox regulars) with 66 runs scored and 32 RBI. These aren't exactly world beaters, but are better than most Chi-Sox shortstops of recent years. However, his biggest contribution to the Chi-Sox is defensively, with 12 errors in 142 games, and a steadying influence in the Sox infield. Guillen, by the way, was one of the players involved in the Sox-San Diego trade that sent Lamar Hoyt to the Padres. At first glance that trade looked like a real goof by the Sox, but after watching Guillen for most of this year (Luis Salazar, also involved in the trade, has played well at times) the trade appears to look better and better for the Sox. There must be other AL rookies out there that are also having good years for their teams. Who are they? One other question. In the late 60s, maybe even the early 70s, Steve Carlton was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to Philadelphia for another "big name" pitcher in, I believe, a straight up deal. Is there anybody out there that knows or remembers the details of this trade? Who did the Cards receive from Phily for Carlton? What year? This question has been driving me nuts! jcs at !ihnp4!ttrdc!jwz
