I'd like to put to rest a strange vision that I have been having the last couple weeks. I seem to remember a ball player from the early 70's, possibly on the A's, who either had a toothpick surgically attached to his lip or whose trademark was to always carry a toothpick in his mouth. Does any know what I'm talking about, or am I just suffering from some strange illness? If you have any information regarding this toothpick, please let me know. Thanks, Alan Foonberg

I once remember Tony Kubek saying on a broadcast that Washington would one day have it crammed down his throat on a slide play at second. But he never has..... Dave Gillies

I believe you're thinking of U.L. Washington who played for Kansas City during the latter part of the 70's into the 80's. He plays for someone else now but I can't remember who. -- Bernie Dougan Perkin-Elmer Southern Development Center 2486 Sand Lake Road Orlando, Florida 32809 (305)850-1040 {decvax!ucf-cs, ihnp4!pesnta, vax135!petsd}!peora!bd

U.L. Washington of the Royals a few years back used to have the ever present tooth pick.

Washington played every game of the 1980 season with a toothpick in his mouth. I think he removed it after that year because of all the negative press he got about it. Coincidentally, his stats were worse without the toothpick. Do any Expos fans know if he's still playing without the toothpick or has he put it back in? Eric M. Wilcots
