Well, the Jays and Cards have wrapped up their respective divisions now which just leaves the AL west undecided. An interesting situation came up in the Jays/Yanks game yesterday (10/5). Garth Iorg was on 1st and a ball was hit up the middle which the pitcher deflected. Willie Randolph, who was moving to the bag, turned to chase the deflected, but ran right into Iorg. Iorg was immediately called out. If a feilder, while trying to play a batted ball, is hit by a runner, the runner is out. Isn't it true though that if the ball is thrown, rather than batted, that the runner isn't called out? If this is the case shouldn't Iorg have been safe since the ball was deflected? I may be totally wrong, since the announcers made no mention of this, but then again Fergie Olver is certainly no expert, and Bobby Cox was arguing about *something*. -- Bruce Gamble - abgamble@water.UUCP
