I don't feel that I have to justify Peter Gammons' writing anymore, it stands on it's own merits. Daniel Scneider rebuffed me by claiming that I didn't know what I was talking about, etc. My reply to Dan is that he apparently doesn't know how to read the Globe sportsection, there is both "reporting" and "sports journalism" in it. Did you ever read Ray Fitzgerald's columns before he died? If the two papers were to merge then maybe Murray Chass would get to cover fly fishing, maybe. I'm so glad that the Yankees and Mets didn't make it, now it's time to eliminate the Dodgers. Go Jays! Go Cards! David Cherson

Since Gammons probably reaches a lot of you baseball fans through the Globe, syndication or the Sporting News, you should all be cautioned to take his gossip, especially when it concerns the Red Sox with a small grain of salt. He deserves much credit for his reporting, but I do not make the mistake of lionizing his every word. Or any sportswriter for that matter; most of what they write is based on opinion which may be as justified as mine or yours. > My reply to Dan is that he apparently doesn't know how to read the Globe > sportsection, there is both "reporting" and "sports journalism" in it. David, let me assure you that there is no great mystery in the Globe's sportspages which I overlook. Afterall I have a lot of experience in sportspage reading and I do it as rigorously as the next sports-nut. I did read Ray Fitzgerald's column when I first moved to Boston, but usually I found them to be somewhat of local interest only. The Saturday breakfast idea was cute, though. Perhaps his death has left a void in journalistic talents behind him, because neither Mike Madden or Bob Ryan come close to filling my appetite. Also, David, this is the second time you've insulted Murray Chass without giving the slightest evidence why you don't like his writing. I don't take it as personally as you might think, so perhaps some substantiation is required if you'd think your opinion carries any weight. > I'm so glad that the Yankees and Mets didn't make it, now it's time to > eliminate the Dodgers. > Go Jays! Any team that can beat the Yankees must be damned good. Daniel Schneider {decvax}!decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-2littl!schneider
