Last night the Yankees came to Toronto for the first time since the booing of the Canadian anthem in Yankee stadium. Many people I know were rather displeased when hearing what happened in NY, but a lot just considered the source, and let it go. So, anyway, when the American anthem started playing everyone was very quite, and them a small number of boos and hisses were heard. When this 'retaliatory' booing started, a lot of fans told the people booing to shut up and to show some class. Then most fans started singing the American anthem (the words are shown on the scoreboard). This singing was in fact louder than the Canadian anthem is usually sung. Then everybody cheered when it was done. Normally everybody just stands and waits for it to finish. Of course everybody then sang the Canadian anthem even louder than they sang the American anthem. The bad news for Blue Jay fans/Yankee haters is that Wynegar tied the game with a solo home run with two outs in the ninth. This clutch hit allowed the Yankees to stay alive in the pennant race. They went ahead by 1 run on a dropped fly ball that should have ended the Yankees ninth. The Jays just have to win today or tomorrow now to clinch it, unfortunately I just had tickets for Friday's game. -- Malcolm MacPhail, Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto UUCP: {linus,ihnp4,allegra,floyd,utzoo,cornell,decwrl,uw-beaver}!utcsri!malcolm CSNET: malcolm@Toronto ARPA: malcolm%Toronto@CSNet-Relay --

Yesterday, the Blue Jays finally clinched the AL-East. One interesting thing about the game is that the Jay's pitcher Dole Alexander is an ex-Yankee. The Yankees just dropped him a few seasons ago, and the Jays snatched him up. In fact the Yankees are still paying most of his salary ($740,000 a year). I guess this doesn't please Mr. Steinbrenner too much. Also in the game, Garth Iorg (rhymes with gorge) drilled two line shots right at Yankees pitchers (one had to leave when he tried to protect his face with his pitching hand), and also sent a foul ball ripping into the Yankee dugout. Garth also ran into the Yankee second baseman Willie Randolph when a ball deflected off of the pitcher's glove causing Randolph to change direction at the last minute. Maybe Garth wanted to shrink the Yankee lineup in case today's games mattered. Speaking of today's game.... This afternoon Yankee pitcher Phil Niekro won his 300th career victory with a shutout over the Blue Jay farm hands. Phil went the distance, and got a great round of applause from the Blue Jay fans when it was over. He also got a little teasing from his teammates. When he came out to pitch the 9th, leading 8-0, the Yankees had 3(!) pitchers pretending to warm up. When there was just one out left to get, Phil's brother Joe made that long walk to the mound... but they left him in and he held on to that 8 run lead. Congrats to Phil Niekro. -- Malcolm MacPhail, Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto UUCP: {linus,ihnp4,allegra,floyd,utzoo,cornell,decwrl,uw-beaver}!utcsri!malcolm CSNET: malcolm@Toronto ARPA: malcolm%Toronto@CSNet-Relay --

Yup. The Blue Jay regulars needed that rest. The only regular who started was Damaso Garcia, and guess who committed the first error of the game? As one local commentator put it, the Yankess beat the Syracuse Chiefs 8-0. Dave Sherman Toronto -- { ihnp4!utzoo pesnta utcs hcr decvax!utcsri } !lsuc!dave
