I have this theory, see, that the Mets are going to be the Montreal Expos of the next couple years. Always close, but never in front. Especially now that they have Gary Carter :-). The Mets are weak at third and in left, and got good years out of Santana and Chapman. I don't think they will be as close next year. Cub's Trade Rumors: It seems that the Cubs are set on picking up someone who can hit 30-40 homeruns a year (hopefully a lefty). People that have been mentioned so far include trades for Andre Dawson or Tony Armas. There is always a possibility of picking up a free agent as Kirk Gibson and C. Fisk are both going to be free a's. The talk has been of trading Durham or Lee Smith. Trading Durham seems like a bad idea as he gives power and a left handed bat. He is also young and will probably get better. On the other hand, I've never seen a starter who misses more games with things like eye infections... Lee Smith never seems to be as good as he might. He is not to good in clutch situations (ie. when he comes in with runners on). But the bullpen is already hurting and losing Smith wouldn't help. If you have to trade a front-line guy (assuming that Ron Cey is valueless), I would get rid of Moreland. He doesn't give you much power (14hrs) and he is one of the slowest players in the game. He is a good clutch hitter, but his value is never going to be higher than it is now. If he doesn't get traded, I'll bet he plays third base next year. Why oh why didn't the Cubs trade Lopes to the Blue Jays when they wanted him??? The World Series? St. Louis in five. -- James Cooper ..!ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!wjnz
