[net.sport.baseball] subway series

ken@ihuxq.UUCP (01/25/84)

A "subway series" is a World Series in which both teams are
located in the same city--the term "subway" referring to the
method of transportation between playing sites. New York, where
the public transportation electric rail system is called "the
subway", has been host to several such World Series. It is the
only city to bear that distinction so far. I guess the only
other candidate these days is Chicago, which is to say that
New York will retain that honor indefinitely.

It is conceivable that the LA Dodgers and California Angels could
meet in a World Series (much more conceivable than seeing the 2 Chicago
teams in the Series). That would most definitely be called a subway series.
Also, although there is a train, but no subway between Oakland and San
Francisco, a World Series featuring the Giants and A's could be called
a subway series.

If you are implying that New York teams are the most likely ones to
end up in the Series, then you must have forgotten how far the
Chicago White Sox got last year. In fact, did the combined wins of
the Yankees and the Mets equal what Chicago won last year? That
would be interesting to see. Hmmmm........

Also, way back when, the Cubs and White Sox did indeed meet in the
World Series. It happened at least once, but it was so long ago
that subways might not have been invented yet. :-)

There have been two subway series not involving New York teams.

In 1906 the White Sox and the Cubs (I'm not sure whether they used
those nicknames back then) won their respective leagues. The Cubs
won 116 games and were in first place by 20 games! The Sox won the
series, though, 4 games to 2.

In 1944 the St. Louis Browns and the Cardinals faced each other, the
Cardinals winning, 4 games to 2.

There have been an incredible 13 subway series involving New York teams
plus 4 between the Yankees and the L.A. Dodgers and 1 between the
Yankees and the S.F. Giants.

If Milwaukee were to meet Montreal in October, would it be called a
sub-zero series?

There most certainly *is* a subway between Oakland and San Francisco!
It's called BART, and it goes *under* the bay. If that ain't a subway, I
don't know what is.

In fact, there *is* a subway between San Francisco and Oakland. It's called
BART, short for Bay Area Rapid Transit. As an ex-NYer, I find BART rather
pretty, quiet, safe, and clean, but for shear gutsiness in moving large
numbers of people all over, give me New York [or Chicago or London]

In response to the letter asking what was the most recent world series game
where the two teams were from the same state, it was in 1956 when the
Brooklyn Dodgers played the New York Yankees. The Yankees took the series
4 games to 3. The year before in '55, the same two teams played, only
Brooklyn won it 4 games to 3.

Here is a little trivia question....

Babe Ruth holds the record for the most home runs in his own home park.
How many home runs was it, and which stadium was it?

The last World Series(prior to the '85 series) between two teams from the
same state was the 1974 series between the A's and the Dodgers.
