Hey, how about Angels and Braves.

All you Americans are going to love it when the Blue Jays meet
the Expos for the World Series this October!

jimph@ihuxt.UUCP (06/15/83)

All you other cities are going to love it when the Cubs meet the White Sox
in the World Series!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, the Blue Jays don't have half
a chance to win the division title. They are in the best division in base-
ball and don't have enough hitting or defense. The Expos are in the Cubs
division so they won't win anything.

zeus@houxf.UUCP (06/15/83)

All you cities are going to love it when
the NY Mets don't meet the NY Yankees
in the World Series.
According to the standings,
they're a few of the worst teams in baseball

steve@hpdb.UUCP (07/08/83)

It's going to be the Bronx Bombers and the Atlanta Braves in
the World Series this year. Yankees are finally playing like everybody
expect them to. Last time I checked the stats, they were first in team
hitting and third in HRs. Nettles is back to his old form and hitting
those clutch homers. The pitching is still not quite there yet but good
solid defense is making the life of Yankee pitchers a lot easier. Bench
strength again will play the key role. Baltimore is the only team that
has any chance of challenging the Yanks this year, but the loss of Flan-
nagan makes it tougher. The rest of AL East should make the summer ex-
citing. In the NL side, Joe Torre's troops are simply too much for the
Dodgers who by the way already made 90 errors. With one year of playoff
experience under their belt, the Braves should make it to the Series.
My prediction for this year's World Champion......

Fontenot, the newest Yankee Pitcher has all the tools, he will
sure up the starting pitching staff and make it a close race.
However the N.Y. bullpen is not the bullpen of yesteryear with
such greats as Lyle, Gossage, and Davis. This could be N.Y`s
downfall. Furtermore the Toronto BlueJays are for Real. The
Jays remind me an awful lot of the 69 Mets. If they can just
hang in there and play ball against N.Y., Baltimore, and Detroit
(not to mention the brew crew), they will be the World Champions.
Otherwise fall classic will return (by default) to the Bronx -
where it belongs.

On the contrary, predictions concerning the outcome of the World Series
made after the Series has begun are somewhat more meaningful than those
made earlier, since the latter predictions usually have more evidence
to support them. I did not mean to be mean to Ken; I just could not
resist teasing him about his detailed predictions after the first game
of the Series dealt him a poor hand on 2 of his 4 predictions. I don't
hate Baltimore; in fact, I think it's great that they kept the Yankees
and the Red Sox out of the playoffs.

By the way, what does everyone think about Howard "the Mouth that roared"
Cosell? I wish that his plane or car to the ballpark would get hijacked.
That man knows next to nothing about baseball. He seems to find it
necessary to talk all the time about nothing. We heard about the great
city of Baltimore, the heart rending story about John Denny hating his
father, the rumor that Bowie Kuhn is still to be heard from on some
decisions and that the Mouth couldn't tell us what, etc. Maybe he'll
get run over by Reagan's Limo. One more point to mention. I was impressed
with Earl Weaver's commentary during the game. He was insightful and
seemed almost clairvoyant at times (I don't like exaggerating but I can't
find the right choice of words, so excuse me). Maybe if ABC would keep
him and fling the other announcers off the upper deck, we could have
an enjoyable broadcast.

So far Ken Glass is not correct. Maddox hit a home run. Denny won a game
for the Phillies, and so on. Oh, well, there's always next year. Phillies
in 5, especially now that they've won the first one.

Just can`t resist congratulating the Detroit Tigers on their
whumping on the Padres. Detroit has a GREAT ball club. S.D.
looked sick, sick, sick. What starters! Good middle relief,
for certain. Gossage - HA! Give me Lee Smith any day.
Even my kid sister would`ve tagged second base!
If the Cubs had made it, we`d still be playing ball (It woulda
went 7, my bookie told me so :-) ). Revenge, how sweet.

Now if they can only sign Sutcliffe, and get a good hitting
SS, maybe that Dunston kid. I`ll save that for later, when
the icicles are hanging from my window and I`m longing to
see the ivy-covered walls of the friendly confines.

Cubs Forever!

The Cards would have been world champs after game 6
had the following occurred.

Whitey leaves in Ken Daley!!
Daley was absolutely unhittable in the 8th innning and
throughout the entire post season (10 shutout innings in relief).

I know Whitey set up things so he could have Worrel pitch to Sundberg
and Balboni, and that Worrel struck out 6 batters in game 5.
But, with Daley in there the Cards win. KC goes down 1-2-3 in the
ninth, game over no ifs, ands or buts.

Re: Ken Dayley or Todd Worrell....

Personally, I thought Whitey made a mistake only in leaving Worrell in to
face Dane Iorg. After all, Worrell is only a rookie who has just seen his
team start to go belly-up behind him, and Iorg is an excellent fastball-hitting
lefty with a well-documented history of hitting well in the post-season.

Put a different pitcher in, and the Royals would have to go to a righty pinch
hitter. I was rooting for KC, and I was very happy when no change was made -
Iorg was the guy I wanted to see up in that situation. I'm sure Whitey must
have thought about making the change - I wonder why he didn't go for it? Oh
well...nothing like hindsight, I guess.
