>Can someone who's read the Chicago papers tell me what the Cubs view of the >Trillo trade is? Is Trillo: >a). Simply a back-up infielder, along with Speier This is what the papers say. Jim Frey said "This gives me a lot more flexibility. Trillo can play second or third and give Sandberg or Cey a day off. He can also be used as a pinch-hitter. (something about him being a good clutch hitter.)" Dallas Green said he got him because he could be used as a back-up infielder, and because he was playing on the same winter-league team as Shawon Dunston. Apparently Trillo has been helping Dunston with his game and Green wants him to continue. I think that getting Trillo was inconsequential. Dave Owen who they traded for him was not to great (he couldn't beat Bowa or Spier for the job at short), and Owen is getting fairly old (ie ~26 or 27). Besides the Cubs still have Lopes, Spier and Dayette who can play infield, along with Moreland who could (should) be replaced in the outfield. After the season, Dallas Green talked big about getting some middle relief and a power-hitting outfielder. Now, however, he keeps saying he won't disturb the "nucleus" of the team, and he won't spend much money. Should be a neat trick. -- James Cooper "...and Cey goes down swinging..."
