[net.sport.baseball] Hall of Fame plea

Is there anybody out there that disagrees with this statement:

Either Brooks Robinson is very overrated, or Ron Santo is very underrated,
or both.

Yes. Brooks Robinson was one of the finer players at third base in
all time. Ron Santo, though good, was not in the same class.

"Getting a bit rough, is it?"
"Remain silent, or you will die" Who said them, what story?

I will grant you that Robinson was a better fielder than Santo. But Santo
was a very good fielder, and a much better hitter. While I would have been
happy to have either of them on a team I was managing, given a choice, I
would choose Santo.

I think Santo was underrated for two reasons. One is that he played on the
Cubs during a period when they failed to get into post-season competition;
so he never got the kind of national exposure that Robinson got. (And
Robinson was lucky enough to put together an incredible set of defensive
gems in a single series. The man was very good, but he did not make that
kind of play nearly that often.)

The other reason is the continuing undervaluing of the base on balls in
baseball. The walks made the difference between Santo being a good hitter,
and an outstanding one.

During their playing days in Chicago, Santo and Billy Williams were
generally regarded as comparable players, and (after Ernie Banks got old)
the two stars of the team. But Williams was easily elected to the Hall,
while Santo hasn't made it. There ain't no justice.

For further discussion about Santo, see the cover story of the current
"National Pastime" published by SABR. He's one of a dozen players
proposed a deserving of enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.
