[] Well, I just saw the list of odds for betting on pennant and world series wins this year. It runs as follows: NL: Cards, Dodgers, Mets, Reds 4-1 7-1; Cubs 6-1 10-1; Padres 10-1 16-1; Astros, Expos 15-1 23-1; Braves, Phillies, Pirates 50-1 75-1; Giants 100-1 150-1. AL: Royals, Tigers, Yankees 4-1 7-1; Blue Jays 6-1 10-1; White Sox 8-1 13-1; Orioles, A's 10-1 16-1; Angels, Twins 15-1 23-1; Red Sox 20-1 30-1; Brewers 30-1 45-1; Mariners 40-1 60-1; Rangers 50-1,75-1; Indians 80-1 120-1. My picks for undervalued teams: Braves (how can any team with Dale Murphy and Bruce Sutter be 50-1?), Phillies (played ok the second half of last year), Red Sox (I don't know anything about the AL but they seem better than 20-1). My picks for overvalued teams (man the asbestos shields!): Cards (I don't think their offense and relief pitching will be as good), Yankees (ditto for the offense and middle relief - of course, they could be an entirely different team by the time the season starts) How about a net.predictions contest this year? I favor really simple rules, such as: One set of predictions to a player. This must be sent to the contest referee (I volunteer) by March 17 or some equally arbitrary date. All the predictions will be posted to the net on this date. Each player has 1000 units to bet any way they want using the above odds (we should get odds for divisional winners as well). The player who ends up with the most units wins the VMS manual of his or her choice + the admiration of the entire network till next season. How about it? The Red Sox are an interesting team. They're the only team in the Major Leagues that, year after year, fields the same type of team: all offense, no speed, no hitting, no pitching or defense. About the only good thing about the Red Sox is the history and tradition of Fenway Park. --->My picks for overvalued teams (man the asbestos shields!): --->Cards (I don't think their offense and relief pitching will be as good), You're probably correct; they're bound to suffer a letdown after getting embarrassed in the World Series. I also think they'll miss Andujar in the stretch run. Can't agree with you about their offense, though, because they didn't have that much to start with. --->Yankees (ditto for the offense and middle relief - of course, they could --->be an entirely different team by the time the season starts) That's the Yankees for you.

I also think they'll miss > Andujar in the stretch run... Andujar fades in the stretch run. Look at how he tailed off last year as a classic example, late in the regular season, and both in the League Championship Series and the World Series. The Oakland management is going to use a five-man rotation to try to avoid burning out Andujar so that he'll be able to contribute late in the season. Bruce Rodean {ihnp4|hplabs}!hpfcla!rodean
