Billy Williams just missed the Hall of Fame, this time by only four votes. He's been on the ballot five years now. Is is only crime that he mouthed off about the writers not voting him in years 3 and 4? Or is it that he was magnificent on non-winning Cub teams for so many years? Or is it that the voting sportswriters of the BBWA have more than 25% ignorant, narrow-minded morons? -- from the bewildered musings of Jim Brunet "The Cubs shall rise again!" {ihnp4, decvax}!ima!jimb (most reliable) ihnp4!vortex!ism780!jimb or jimb at ima/*cca-unix.arpa ^ this asterisk is necessary!

In a recent article (arguing that Ron Santo should be in the Hall of Fame), I erroneously stated that Billy Williams had been elected. As most of you are aware by now, he missed by a handful of votes this year. The comparison with Santo is still basically valid -- Ron got less than 50 votes. I still think the two of them were very comparable, and they should both be in the Hall. Frank Adams ihpn4!philabs!pwa-b!mmintl!franka Multimate International 52 Oakland Ave North E. Wasn't Willie Mays on the Hall of Fame ballot this year? If so why didn't he get voted in? Was it something to do with kicking him out of baseball for involvment in Atlantic City casinos? Or what? Seems like he would have been an automatic selection the first year he was elligable. I agree, if he's not in there how could the other Willie (Mac) possibly make it? -- ......................................... . "Living forever isn't just a dream!" . . . . I like Billy Williams, too, but what is he FAMEous for? What did he give to baseball that none of his peers gave? He may have been one of the sweetest swingers of all time (I saw him play for many years), but he never was a winner (although like Walter Payton, he deserved to be). If I were a sportswriter, I would really have to think hard before I elected him. Ernie Banks hit 200 more homers (roughly speaking) and also won back-to- back MVP's (as a shortstop!!!). THe only thing that Williams might be remembered for (in 50 years) is winning the batting title (in '72 or '71). Glen Beckert once hit .365, but no one mentions it too often. Since Mays wasn't on the ballot, I assume he has long since been elected. > > I like Billy Williams, too, but what is he FAMEous for? What did he give > to baseball that none of his peers gave? Firstly, the criteria of giving something to baseball that nobody else did is not valid. Examples are so numerous I won`t even go into them. But if you want FAMEous, how about a consecutive game playing streak of over 1,100 games! Only Garvey and Lou had more. That`s pretty good if you ask me. He hit over 400 homers, something less than 30 players have done - in good company, I`d say. More stats have been posted, so I won`t go over them. Just because Williams didn`t play on a championship team is NO reason to exclude him. I saw Williams play practically his entire carrer. He IS a winner, but never got a lot of press. That also is no excuse not to vote for him. Any sportswriter worth his $$ knows Billy was a great ballplayer, and I`m confident he`ll be enshrined very, very soon. Tom O`Connor
