#R:mitccc:-13500:pur-ee:5100012:000:1328 pur-ee!davy Aug 13 10:28:00 1982 I agree! What's the big deal? Sure, if a person cheats just so he can get his name on that stupid list, then that does make him sort of a low-life. However, if he cheats to create situations he hasn't been able to encounter the 'normal' way, what's so bad about that? He is now prepared for it when it happens in a 'real' game (you could stretch it and pretend he talked with old-timers before he left). Another example - how many people have ever cheated at Adventure, Zork, Wander, etc.? Now, cheating here takes even less intelligence than cheating at Rogue. All you do is print out a copy of the database, and then follow along, doing everything you're supposed to. We played a game of 'wander castle' this way, and it goes a lot faster, plus, you don't have to worry about dying and going through all the preliminary crap again. So, if some guy wants to cheat at Rogue, why shouldn't he? If he takes the time to figure out how it works, how to get around it, etc., then he certainly should be allowed to use his knowledge for his own benefit. The only thing I think he should do is, if he gets a score that will put him in the top ten, then he should save the game, and LOWER the score before the game ends. Cheating just to get your name in the top ten is pretty low. --Dave Curry decvax!pur-ee!davy

Actually, rather than encouraging cheating, why not do something to allow people to get these things legitimately. I suggest that future versions of Rogue should allow people to start further on if they are demonstrated accomplished players. Ie., when a player dies at level 20, give him a chance to get a version of his game saved at level ten say thay can be played time and time again. Thus somebody who wants to fight xorns and gets bored by centaurs and ants doesn't have to fight them.

Brad Templeton says that an accomplished rogue who wants to fight xorns shouldn't have to struggle with ants. What is the difference between fighting a xorn and fighting an ant? Essentially none. The numbers at the bottom of the screen change, that's all. Pleasure in rogue comes from what YOU make it, not from what rogue makes. Rogue battles are so simplistic. Sort of like primitive sex. Bang, bang, bang, until one combatant or the other gives in. And there are a whole slew of people talking about how great it is to engage in combat with a xorn rather than a hobgoblin. When it's all the same. Sound familiar? Bang, bang, bang. And don't they LOVE having their scores posted for all to see. Ha. Btw, I enjoy playing rogue now and then; I just don't think it would really satisfy me (or anyone) in the long run if rogue was made easier. Note that there are people (not me!) who win without cheating now. Andy Tannenbaum Bell Labs Whippany, NJ (201) 386-6491
