I`ve had games with armor class around 0 or -1, and the chance of confusion seemed to drop to 25% or so. Umber Hulk can confuse at a distance, so if you use a staff of light, they can get you from across a room. One thing I`ve tried with success a couple of times is to wear a de-cursed ring of teleportation. It can be a pain at times if you are trying to get somewhere in particular, but I`ve been saved several times by being teleported before I got beat to death. Tony Andrews pur-ee!tony
