I ran into a treasure room on level 19, killed one or two monsters that walked up to the door. (I never entered the room, but hit "s" to entice them to walk in my direction.) A vampire was next. I got a message that the vampire had hit me, and expected to see "you feel weaker" but instead I got "the umber hulk's gaze has confused you." Indeed! The umber hulk queued up after I had already engaged the vampire in battle. I couldn't hit the U diagonally from the doorway, nor could it hit me, so how did I come to be confused ??? Needless to say, I didn't survive. Here are the last three "frames" from the scene of the crime: --- --- --- ?@### V@### V@### ?| ?| U|

I have gotten confused by an Umber Hulk from a distance by lighting up a room. (Who said wands ot light aren't dangerous?) But if you can't see it, it shouldn't be able to confuse you. Incidentally, ***** S P O I L E R ******** potions of blindness are useful - they stop you from getting confused by Umber Hulks and transfixed by Eyes. If you have a spare healing, you may want to intentionally quaff one to get rid of an E that's standing on a doorway. Dave Sherman Magnifibeast

It's been my experience (3.7) that Umber Hulks CAN confuse you at a distance, from anywhere in a room, even if you can't see them. AM I wrong, or has this happened to others? Dave Ellis Bell Labs, Piscataway ...harpo!npoiv!npois!houxm!5941ux!dje
