The TAR HEELS have hit the skids again, showing that they aren`t
exactly ready for domination in the NCAA yet. Their young players
need more time on the court, and I`m sure the DEAN will bring them
along very well. I`d love to hear something about them Runnin` Rebs
from UNLV. Can they go all the way? Supposedly, their schedule isn`t
the toughest, which is why it took so long for them to reach 1
in the writer`s poll. I think they are supposed to be on CBS on Sat.
but I`d like to have a preview of what to expect to see.

As far as conferences go, I`ll give the nod to the ACC also. ESPN has
had a lot of their games, and watching has convinced me. However, if
you want to see a tough game, watch BIG 10 action. I think it`s the
most physical conference around. That`s why Indiana`s Uwe Blab isn`t
living up to the potential he showed as a junior/senior for the
Effingham Ill. high school team he almost led to the Illinois high
school class AA (751 or more students) BB title. It`s also why a guy
like Purdue`s Russell Cross will continue to improve. He`s from the
Chicago area, where basketball can get very rough & tumble.

Putting it up from half-court,

Sorry, folks, even as an ACC chauvinist I can't agree that the ACC is
currently the best overall conference. Certainly when UNC or UVA are
at the top of their games they can play with anyone in the country.
Possibly the same can be said for Maryland and Wake Forest. NC State,
however, is mediocre without Derek Whittenberg (who is back in practice)
and Duke, Clemson and Georgia Tech are far, far behind. From top to
bottom, I'd say the Big East is the best overall conference I have seen
with the ACC and SEC coming in a fairly close second. Because of the
differences in conference rules, however, it is difficult to rank them
reliably.

With this spurt of interest in basketball, is it perhaps time to form
a net.sport.[basket|bball|hoops] news group?
