                     World Cup Results

India won the World Cup yesterday when they beat the
defending champions West Indies in the finals.

Scores:

          India 183
          Windies 140

Windies came to this tournament without a World Cup
loss. India, on the other hand, had won only one game in the
previous two World Cups, and that was against lowly East
Africa. Not surprisingly, when the two clashed in their
first round robin match, the question was haow bad India's
defeat would be. The bookies in London must have parted
with lot of money when India went on to register an upset
win with some fine batting by Mohinder Amarnath(the nemesis
of the Windies when India toured them recently). There was
no looking back for the Indians after that as they beat Aus-
tralia to reach the semi-finals, England to be in the
finals, and finally West Indians for a second time to
become the World Champions.

Other world cup details

The teams were divided into two pools. Pool A was West
Indies, India, Australia and Zimbabwe and Pool B was Eng-
land, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Each team in a
pool played every other team twice, to avoid a freaky win
deciding the semi-finalists. The Windies topped pool A with
only one loss (against India). India were placed second with
losses to West Indies and Australia. Australians took the
third place with losses to Zimbabwe, India and West
Indies(twice). In pool B, England were the champions with
only one loss (to New Zealand), Pakistan second , New Zea-
land third and Sri Lanka last. West Indies and England were
favoured to reach the finals for a repeat of the exciting
match they played in the last World Cup Final. But that was
not to be! India upset England in the semi-finals while
West-Indies beat Pakistan(without the bowling abilities of
their captain Imran Khan injured with a stress fracture in
the shin. He did bat though, and made a century against Sri
Lanka)

Highest World Cup (Individual)Score

Against Zimbabwe(no mean team , they upset Australia in
their first match), India were 17 for 5 when Kapil Dev came
into bat.At the end of 50 overs India were some 260 for 8
with the Indian captain hitting a sizzling 174(17 fours and
6 sixes) to make the highest World Cup score. Most pundits
of the game consider it very unlikely that any batsman will
ever beat this record!
