Just read that Bill Russell will be replaced by Tom Heinsohn for CBS basketball coverage of the NBA. Given the discussion of Broadcasters in the newsgroups, what did people think of Bill Russell as a basketball color analyst? I think he is excellent for many reasons. He knows the game so much more that Gary Bender of Brent Mouse-burger and he also is very funny in my opinion. He never gets excited like Bender and Brent (who constantly raise their respective voices during the slightest increase in excitment) and consistently has the proper analysis of the situation. I for one say bring back Bill Russell.... Andy Andres, AT&T Consumer Products Labs, Neptune, NJ ...houxo!lpa

I've felt that Bill Russell was not too good as a commentator. While he certainly knows the game as well as anyone, his comments are almost always typical cliches and trite basketball "truths", such as: The defense has to hang tough now! They have to stop giving up those easy points! The key to this game has been the shifts in momentum! The team who scores the most points in the final quarter is going to win this game! (score tied after three quarters) The above are all actual coments made during last season. I've gone through whole games where there haven't been any better comments The epitome was when Russell quoted John Wooden (I think), "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"
