When I was posting my previous message (to net.sport) on pre-season basketball picks, I realized (much to my chagrin and HORROR) that net.sport.basketball does not exist!!! How can this be (with the college basketball (and pro for that matter) just a couple of weeks away??? So what'ya say sport fans?? How about lobbying for the formation of net.sport.basketball??? You can mail me or post replies if you are in favor of this. Allen England at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Naperville, IL ihnp4!ihuxb!alle

I am all for it. We could discuss the ridiculous new format in the NBA for having sixteen (read ridiculous number of) teams in the playoffs. No longer does winning one's division really mean anything. We can discuss who will stop the Doctor this year, and why Ralph Sampson is the most overrated player in the history of basketball. We can rejoice together over CBS' firing of Bill Russell and wonder why CBS changed their opening music for the championsip series l And of course college ball. Can a non-ACC team win the championship? Will Kenny Fields really bring the Bruins back into the top spot? Will the non-unity in terms of shot clocks and three-point-shots destroy the hopes of any independents? and college ball in general? Actually, net.sport is used infrequently enough that we could converse from this newsgroup, but the point is, *we* have to start the discussion rolling. DW Yale

new how to create newsgroups I'd just create net.sport.basketball right now and forestall yet another repeat of the same old "Why-can't-expire- auto-create-as-well-as-destroy" discussions. GREG -- {ucbvax!hplabs | allegra!nbires | decvax!brl-bmd | harpo!seismo | ihnp4!kpno} !hao!woods

Since the pro-basketball season has already started and the college season will start with in the month. Let get a net.sport.basketball group going before the season expires. --- arnold-- --- Arnold Miller, U of Maryland, College Park MD Usenet: ...!seismo!umcp-cs!arnold Arpanet: arnold%umcp-cs@CSNet-Relay

Funny, I don't have net.sport.basketball here and I don't recall it ever being created. In general, net.sport.basketball is a good idea. The problem is that net.sport.basketball and net.sport.baseball both have the same first 13 characters. This means that the dot files for the two newsgroups on 2.9 and earlier versions of news will have problems. 2.10 won't have problems with this. It isn't clear how serious the problems are, but I suspect there will be holes in the article numbers (since net.sport.baseball and basketball will take local article numbers from the same space). This does not seem serious. However, I don't know if other problems would result too. We could try it and see how it works out, with the proviso that we cancel it if it causes a lot of problems. Mark

Suggested abbreviation: net.sport.bkb I will grant that "bkb" is hardly an obvious abbreviation for "basketball" (or anything else for that matter), but: 1) it IS an abbreviation where none currently exists 2) it does use the (phonetically) most prominent letters in the word it attempts to abbreviate Other possibilities: net.sport.nba (not limited to the pros) net.sport.hoop (? confusable with hula hoop ?) net.sport.net (ditto for tennis, lacrosse, ...) Another vote for net.sport.basketball. If the name might cause conflicts with net.sport.baseball then how about net.sport.hoops or net.sport.hoopball? (How about upper-case letters? Is there some reason why newsgroup names can't be in upper case? If not, let's try net.sport.Basketball.)
