Yes, we should let the "professionals" into the Olympics:  the athletes we
get now are so amateurish :-).

I have heard that the sports association for each sport (or set of sports,
e.g. alpine skiing) makes up the rules on what you can do as an amateur.
Several allow athletes to earn a certain amount of money to support
themselves.  They can earn quite a lot if they put it into a trust fund; I
don't know what kind of conditions are placed on the fund.  By the way,
I'll bet that Descente paid the US Ski Team (not the skiers) to wear their
ski outfits.

I'm not complaining.  It's about time amateurs in the West got paid
an amount comparable to the Eastern "amateurs".  I wouldn't complain if they
opened the Olympics up to real professionals either.

Speaking of amateur sports, did anyone watch the USA - Cuba
boxing on the last Saturday of the Olympics.  During the Heavywight
bout, Cosell, noting the sluggish finish of the USA boxer, complained
that he was fighting "like an amateur"!  But, of course!
