>The Soviet news agency TASS reported today that the Soviet Union would not >participate in the 1984 Summer Olympic Games at Los Angeles, CA. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!! I think that there are some advantages for having the Russians out of the Olympics: 1. Some people may get the wrong idea that the Soviet System that is so successful in cultivating great athletes, is not that bad. The Olympics offers a great form for Soviet propaganda. The Soviets are loosing an opportunity to show the world "how great" is their system. 2. The Soviets will have less KGB agents on the loose. The major disadvantage in the Soviet absence: Russian athletes who desire to defect, will not have their chance. -- Yosi Hoshen Bell Laboratories Naperville, Illinois (312)-979-7321 Mail: ihnp4!ihuxn!jho

Do you really think Carl Lewis and Mary Decker are amateur track athletes? Lewis admits to making close to $200K as a track athlete last year ("expenses" plus track-related endorsements).

>> Does this mean that we'll actually have an amatuer Olympics >> this year? >> Did you see the piece in 20/20 where they showed that "amateur" athletics was big business. Carl Lewis could make something like $ 1 million this year from product endorsements and the "consulting". Sure makes me wish that I had stayed on the Track team in school. The peanut farmer did not start it. Hitler started it in the thirties.
