[net.sport] NBA Madness

wetcw@pyuxa.UUCP (T C Wheeler) (05/21/84)

Good grief, sportsfans, how long is the NBA going to keep this up?
a whole NHL season and these escapees from a tree farm are still running
up and down the court. How long can the fan last? Personally, I can
find nothing more boreing than the first 55 minutes of an NBA game.
I suggest that the whole season be trimmed to only the last 5 minutes
of every game. T

p i opp o['s when all the action is anyway. We could get
the whole season over by New Years by combining all games in which they
play each other. Just think, we have to go through a couple of more weeks
of this nonsense.

NHL season, and these sequoias are still playing.

Uh, you're not likely bored for the first 55 minutes of the game, since
an NBA basketball game is 48 minutes, barring overtime. Perhaps you
were so bored you *thought* it was 60.

T.C. Wheeler, get your facts straight!

1) NBA Basketball games are 48 minutes long, not 60. Therefore, your
comment about forgetting the first 55 minutes of a NBA game show a complete
ignorance of the NBA.

2) The NBA season, at 82 games long, can be a long season. However, Baseball
at 162 and other sports do last several months long and are comparable to
the NBA.

3) The NBA contains some of the finest athletes in the WORLD and if you think
it is boring to watch, then you are missing out. You just can't appreciate a
sport that has action ALL the time, rather than many lulls in the action.
Baseball and Football come to mind first. (I do like these sports, too, though)

Next time you begin lambasting a sport which you obviously know nothing about,
think before you submit.

To those who have pointed out that an NBA game is 48 mins long,
I stand corrected. It seems 148 mins long to me. An NBA game
is boring, boring, boring. College hoops I can watch, but not
NBA. All I have ever seen is two groups of five trading baskets
until the last 5 mins when the action starts. I must say that
my idea of 5 minute games is not new. It was proposed by a
sportswriter in New York several years ago. As for the NBA having
only an 82 game season, Phooey. How about counting all of those
playoff games where everyone but the last place teams seem to
get into the act? It turns into a whole new season from April
through June. Why not a single elimination playoff like the
NCAA? Then let the two finalists go 2 out of 3? The only
reason for the longer playoffs is to fill the pockets of the
owners.

Now, for those who's dander is up, if you like the NBA, more
power to you. Remember, we all march to a different drummer,
and what you like, I might not. All I am doing is commenting
on how I feel about the NBA. I just don't happen to like to
watch ten guys running up and down the court never seeming to
get anywhere until the last few minutes. I prefer watching
a good baseball game where strategy and cunning are the main
ingrediants. A good close football game is another favorite.
From what I have seen of the NBA, the only strategy is to get
some guy with an overworked gland into the key to slam-dunk
the ball and scrape some guys nose off with his elbow. The
NBA does seem to have some problems at the gate in recent
years, so perhaps I am not alone. So, all you NBAers hang
in there, the season only has a few more weeks to go. For
those who are by now seathing and ready to pop a cork, just
explain my errors, don't get mad. I'm not mad, just bored
by the lack of interesting reading in this category. Maybe
this will stir things up a little?

The way I see it, the people who find sporting events boring don't
have much interest in them. Or you only care to watch one or two
particular teams or events that you do find exciting. I happen to
like watching baseball, basketball, hockey, golf, tennis, gynastics,
MOTOR RACING, and virtually any sporting event. I find them much
more interesting than XXXXXX (insert any prime time weekly TV show).
I don't happen to have cable, so I watch very little TV. When a
sporting event does come on, I usually watch it. Unless I am outside
participating in some sporting event.

That last thought may hold the key to this whole boring discussion:
Do you people that find basketball on TV boring ever play basketball?
Maybe if you did you would appreciate what the pros are doing. Have
you ever tried a tomahawk dunk? It isn't real easy to do. Anyway,
armchair quarterbacks can always change the channel if they don't
like what they see. Thank goodness for variety! And I thank GOD for
not letting me be pacified by a TV. A few times a year you can find
me watching the Daytona 500, Indy 500, NCAA basketball tourney, NBA
playoffs, World Series, etc. But most of the time I'll be outside
playing softball, basketball, golf, skiing, etc. or cruising my
Vette.

What problems at the gate ? From what I heard on ESPN,
the NBA was setting attendance records (first time over so many
millions (10?)).

Mr. Wheeler is entitled to his opinion of the NBA. But
if you ask me, he's just trying to make some people mad . .
ugly.

Way to go Mark, I to am a fan and participant of as many sports as I can
get my hands into, Basketball is top of the list! The NBA NFL NL AL USFL
NHL all have a wide variety of action to offer, I find them all interesting,
I'm even a big College sport supporter - who remembers the Cal Bears whipping
poor Stanford with the amazing 5 lateral kick off return for a TD - there is
excitment in each sport. If you can participate in some of these sports it
tends to increase your appriciation of the athletes you see on the old tube,
try it. Hey, I'm only 5-9 but I love playing hoop!

If any of you don't like the NBA then turn off the old set or switch the
channel, I know thats tough for some of you lazy couch potatoes but thats
the way the hoop ball bounces. Go Lakers, whip them Celtics!
