Has any city ever won what could be called the 'Grand Slam' of major league sports? That is won the World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, and the NBA championship all in one year. What is the closest any city has ever come? Just something I thought about as LA went down to defeat last night. Dave Claus AT&T-CP/Indy

The closest I know of is 1969, when the Jets beat the Colts, the Mets beat the Orioles, and the Knicks beat the (Baltimore) Bullets. That was 3 out of 4, all losers also from the same city. (The basketball might have been an earlier round.) Since few cities have all four teams, it is unlikely to occur. Two happens often, and there is probably another three that I don't remember.

Almost, but not quite... the Knicks defeated the Bullets in 1970, not 1969.

The Knicks did not win the championship in '69, the Celtics did. It's still interesting if NY and Baltimore played in playoffs of 3 different sports in one year, though. -- --Bruce Nemnich, Thinking Machines Corporation, Waltham, MA {decvax!cca,ihnp4!mit-eddie,allegra!ias}!godot!bruce, BJN@MIT-MC.ARPA

Detroit was called the "City of Champions" after winning in Baseball and Football (1935) and Hockey (1936), all within 12 months. -- Dave Seaman "My hovercraft is full of eels." ..!pur-ee!pucc-i:ags

What about NY? The Jets won Super Bowl III, the Mets won the '69 series, the Nets won the ABA, the Knicks won (or went to the final, I can't remember) the 1969-70 championship! If the Yankees weren't so awful, I'd like to see a subway series! -- Scott A.
