[net.sport] List of the new 1984 OLYMPIC Events!

lute@abnjh.UUCP (J. Collymore) (07/25/84)

Well, it SEEMS as though there are no Olympic fans out there in the computer
world since I have received NO responses to my earlier query on what the new
1984 events are. (For those of you who don't know, at each Olympiad the host
nation is allowed to introduce new competitive events to the Games.)

So, I have done my own research and come up with a list.

Please note that although some of these events may seem unusual to some of you,
they ARE Medalist events in this year's Olympiad.

This year, the United States, as host nation, is introducing the following:

-- Rhythmic Gymnastics (women only) which includes: hoop, ball, ribbon,
   rope, and clubs.

-- 4-woman team kayak (500 meters).

-- Women's 70 kilometer cycling.

-- Synchronized Swim (women only).

-- Women's 3,000m and 400m hurdles.

-- Women's Heptathlon (formerly Women's Pentathlon, javelin and 200m dash have
   been added).

-- Women's Marathon.

-- Women's Standard Rifle (small bore).

-- Women's Small Bore Sport Pistol.

-- Women's Air Rifle.

-- Men's Air Rifle.

-- Surfsailing (freestyle, long-distance, and slalom).*

* I have heard conflicting reports that this may or may not be a medal
   event.

I hope that this listing will spark some interest for those of you who will
either be viewing or attending the Games.

The 3,000m is NOT a hurdle event, just a normal track run.

I prefer the "new Olympic events" listed in GAMES magazine, which
include the Loose Trunks High Diving competition and the Pole Vault
with No Landing Cushion!

Your list did not include the following (maybe because its participants are too
busy playing netnews or writing TV news scripts):

   Conclusion Jumping.
