[net.sport] Olympic Memories

Wow. What an Olympiad...in spite of the Eastern-bloc boycott,
	occasionally-biased media coverage, sometimes-questionable
officiating, and everything else, it was a fantastic event.

	Random comments and notes:

Will we ever forget Gabriella Anderson-Schiess staggering into
the Coliseum and pushing herself around the track to finish the
	women's marathon 37th? That's courage...

Or what about Daley Thompson, a real class athlete, winning
the decathalon and remaining quietly modest...

Or Mary Lou Retton, gritting her teeth and nailing her vault
	for the gold medal...

Or Edwin Moses just leaving the field behind (13 steps between
	hurdles!) in the 400m hurdles...

Or Flo & the women's volleyball team, playing their hearts out
for the silver medal...the men's volleyball team coming back
to wipe out Brazil for the gold...the women's basketball team,
led by Cheryl Miller, running all over the competition...and, of
course, the men's team walking all the way to the gold. (Side note:
I heard a commentator last night call B. Knight "brilliant" for
his coaching effort in the Olympics...I should like to point out
that my grandmother could have coached that team to the gold,
considering the wealth of talent present there.)

And all the other atheletes, the gymnasts from China, the divers
from Great Britain, the marathoners from Canada, the runners from
Tanzania...they were all wonderful, and a joy to watch.

Can we do it again next month?

Regarding Anderson-Schiess' finish in the Olympic marathon, an article in
the San Diego Running News makes you wonder how courageous her performance
really was. Apparently she did the same thing in a HALF-marathon on
Coronado Island (near San Diego) earlier this summer, and refused aid at
the end, saying something to the effect of, "It happens all the time - I
just don't train enough."

Sounds like rsk the Wombat is still sore because no Purdue players were
invited to the trials (even though Purdue coach Gene Keady was one of those
involved in the selection process, and even though no Purdue players were
chosen in the NBA draft within the first 72 selections).

Bob Knight has nothing left to prove. He has already demonstrated that he
can win with people like Jordan, Perkins and Tisdale playing AGAINST him as
well as FOR him. An Italian basketball expert was quoted in Sports Illustrated
(before the Olympics, of course) as saying this was the WEAKEST U.S. team
ever! The reason? Look at all the people who didn't try out for the team:
Sam Bowie, Mel Turpin, Keith Lee....

I suspect we won't appreciate what Bob Knight has accomplished until the next
Olympics.

You're damn right I'm still sore, and I still wish Bobby Knight
a mid-court heart attack, or perhaps a stroke.

	He's a no-talent bigmouth.

< (Bobby Knight ) A no-talent bigmouth

You must be kidding !! He is one of the greatest basketball
coaches of all time. Tell me one school which would not jump
at the opportunity to hire him, and you'll see just how
successful he really is. Also, look around, I've never heard
any of his former players say anything bad about him. Sure he
is tough, but it is a tough game -- and you play to WIN. His
talent will be obvious this coming season when you see the
overall improvement in the Olympians he coached. (Especially
  watch Mullins and Tisdale).

Bobby Knight is a winner and I'm sure we are all going to see
him in the Kentucky next year with another trophy for his
  crowded mantle.

Keith Lee didn't try out because he had been previously cut from the much
weaker Pan-Am Games team, and Turpin almost definitely wouldn't have made
the Olympic team anyway.

If you want an opinion on Bobby Knight's professional coaching ability,
there's this guy in Chapel Hill, N.C., who whould have a few more NCAA
trophies except for Knight.

How soon they forget.

You can't settle the issue until you've settled how to settle the issue.

I agree that B.K. is one of the greatest college coaches, but he didn't
show it in the Olympics---there was no opportunity to show his brilliance
in the OLympics. Unless brilliance is starting Mr. Jordan and letting him
play.

That's equivalent to saying that Greg Louganis didn't show any brilliance
in the Olympics. Anyone who watched the diving knows that Mr. L. didn't
appear to be working very hard :-).

In both cases, you are ignoring the enormous amount of preparation that
lies behind those deceptively easy wins. Did you watch the first game
against Spain, when the U.S. played their best basketball and put the
game out of reach while Michael Jordan was not even playing? If you
think that having Mr. Jordan in the lineup is an automatic win, then you
have forgotton the Indiana-North Carolina game in the NCAA tournament.
