[net.sport] Query re Olympics coverage

wmartin@brl-tgr.ARPA (Will Martin ) (08/20/84)

Did the ABC American Olympics coverage devote any time at all to the
shooting sports? If so, can anyone who saw this briefly describe
the method of covering the event(s) -- did they just have pictures of
the shooters, pictures of the targets, split screen of shooter and
targert, or what?

For the Canadian readers: did the CBC have any shooting sports coverage,
and what method(s) did they use of depicting them?

Thanks much!

CBC showed some coverage of shooting, all of it taped. It was
basically highlights of the competition only, though.

They used a split screen most of the time. (I suppose this was
supplied by ABC, but maybe CBC patched it up themselves).

I don't know if you mean by "shooting" sports riflery or archery. I worked
at the Games (as a volunteer) in computer scoring at the Men's Archery
Competition. Needless to say, I had a lot of friends back home watching
TV hoping to see me. However, after the four days of the Archery competition
were over, all my friends said they had seen NOOOO coverage of the
archery event. Some of my fellow volunteers who lived in the southern
California area said that their friends or family had seen "some"
coverage from their local ABC stations, but that's it.

Over the four days of the event I saw at least 3 ABC camera crews at the venue.
I don't know what they did with their footage, but a number of my friends
here in the U.S. didn't get to see it as far as I can tell.

There was some daytime coverage of both riflery and archery at the Olympics.
I saw at least two segments on riflery and one on archery.
