< the postman hits! --more-- > < You have new mail. > Here's an article I found in today's newspaper. You'd probably have to be a bowler to appreciate it. (Well, at least Al@ihnp4 might.) BOWLER'S MANNER STRIKES OUT It is a fairly well-kept secret, but bowling has its own version of John McEnroe in the person of Marshall Holman. How obnoxious is Holman, the youngest bowler to win the Firestone Tournament of Champions? Let emcee Chuck Pezzano describe it as he did at a recent Hall of Fame and Champions dinner in Fairlawn, Ohio: "Marshall Holman comes from Oregon, where they put out a commemorative stamp in honor of his fine bowling career. There was only one problem. They had to recall the stamps after six months. Too many people were spitting on the wrong side." Holman, 30, kicked out a lane violation light at Las Vegas a couple of years ago and punched a concrete wall and broke his hand in Ohio in 1982. I remember seeing Holman kick out the foul light on a nationally televised event -- the subsequent suspension announced in the paper later came as no big surprise. This past summer, Holman came here to Austin, Texas, to bowl in the Aqua Fest Open, and lost in the final game when Pete Weber struck out from the 7th frame. Holman quickly collected his equipment and left the bowlers' pit while the TV crew presented the awards to Weber. . .after depositing his equipment in the locker room, Holman took out his frustrations on a Rubbermaid trash can after three yards away from where I was sitting. It made a very good impression on some beginner-bowler friends I was sitting with. ("Do *I* look like that when I screw up? Geeeez!") -- _______________________________________________________________________________ "To err is human; to admit it is not."
