A hyperactive Peri! Too ghastly to contemplate.

During a recent trip to Europe, I was able to attend/see/hear about
the following matches:

Cup Winners' Cup Final: Everton 3 Rapid Vienna 1

Everton apparently dominated the match from beginning to end. Based
on their recent performances, they may be the best team in Europe's
history, but now will be unable to prove that.

There was no crowd trouble at this match.

FA Cup Final: (attended) Manchester United 1 Everton 0 aet

This match was played very tactically. Everton were run down after
their previous match, so played for time and sudden advantage. This
they got midway through the second half when a through ball gave them
a breakaway with only United's keeper between three Everton players
and the goal. Kevin Moran broke this play up with a tackle from
behind on Alan Reid which resulted in Moran being the first player
in FA Cup Final history to be sent off. United then rose to the
occasion, held out frequent Everton challenges, and in the 111th
minute, Norman Whiteside scored on a well hit ball which Neville
Southall misjudged.

The only incedence of violence by fans during this match occurred when
a supporter of one side was silenced when he started to sing during a
moment of silence for the victims at Bradford.

World Cup: Finland 1 England 1

Finland had the better chances in this match, England looked poor.

Rous Trophy: Scotland 1 England 0

(watched on the telly at Heathrow) Gough of Dundee United scored
a beautiful goal to beat the Auld Enemy in Hampden Park. The match
was originally scheduled for Wembley, but the government ordered the
match moved to Glasgow, fearing yet another Tartan invasion. A group
of fans, protesting this move, showed up at Wembley anyway.

The goal came midway through the second half, after a prolonged period
of English pressure. Jim Leighton (Aberdeen) was superb in goal. The
goal came when Gough backheeled the ball to McLeish (Aberdeen), who
crossed it for Gough to head in from about 7 feet.

UEFA Cup Second Leg: Real Madrid 0 Videoton 1 (3-1 agg)

Madrid packed 11 men back to prevent Videoton from getting the 4 goals
they needed to win the cup.

World Cup: Iceland 0 Scotland 1

An undeserved victory for Scotland, Iceland had most of the play,
but Jim Bett scored 4 minutes from time to give Scotland 2 vital
points on the road to Mexico. With one match to go, Scotland lead the
group on goal difference. A draw at Wales in their final match will
ensure that Scotland advance to the next round (home and away against
the winners of the Oceania Group). Spain have two more matches, both
with Iceland. They need to win these two by 5 goals more than Scotland
(if Scotland beat Wales, 3 if Wales win) to win the group outright.

The group winner automatically qualifies for Mexico, the runner up
plays Oceania.

European Cup Final: Liverpool 0 Juventus 1

A match marred off the pitch by crowd trouble was marred on the pitch
by poor refereeing. Liverpool dominated the match, forcing Juventus's
goalkeeper to make many hurried saves, but on a break, Juventus's
Zbignew Boniek (Poland) took a dive one yard outside the penalty box.
The official awarded a penalty kick (incorrect), and Michel Platini
(France) scored the only goal of the match.

England's next 8 matches:

vs West Germany in Mexico (5 June)
vs Mexico in Mexico (9 June)
vs Italy in Mexico (12 June)
vs USA in Los Angeles (16 June)
home vs Romania (Fall)
home vs Northern Ireland (Fall)
home vs Turkey (Fall)
at Scotland (Spring)

The Boss gave me one of these, ten seconds, he said. Let's see
