This is the first in a series of three Saturday afternoon flames on truly mundane topics. Flame One is: Why Can't England Win a Cricket match at Lords? I offer no reasons why, but out of the last three matches, England have lost two and drawn one (against Sri Lanka, of all people). England can only beat New Zealand at Lords. New Zealand? Simple. The British Empire spent a couple of centuries exporting
civilisation, which finds its most refined expression in cricket,
to its - er - beneficiaries. Now, to show they've learned the lesson
well, they whip our asses every year.
