All World Cup history information in this and subsequent postings is from the book: The World Cup, Walt Chyzowych (US team coach), 1982 ------------------------------------------------------------------ - FIFA founded in 1904 by 7 original countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland - World Cup tournament proposed by Jules Rimet (FIFA president 1921-1954, and president of French Football Association) in 1920 (Antwerp) and adopted in 1928 (Amsterdam). Cup trophy was renamed the Jules Rimet Cup in 1946 in his honour. - 5 host nations have won the tournament (Uruguay 1930, Italy 1934, England 1966, West Germany 1974, Argentina 1978); 2 have come in second (Brazil 1950, Sweden 1958); 1 came in third (Chile 1962); 2 made it to the quarterfinals (Switzerland 1954, Mexico 1970). - Only one country (Brazil 1958) won a World Cup outside its continent. - Only one country (Brazil) has been in all World Cup final rounds. - By 1978 FIFA membership (146 nations) had exceeded UN membership. - The 1982 World Cup final was viewed by over 2 billion people.
