[net.sport] Australian Open and other stuff

cccallan@ucdavis.UUCP (Allan McKillop) (12/07/85)

Well, I just got done watching the Women's final at the Australian
Open, and all I can say is "What a dissapointment!" Other than for
a little while in the second set, the match was very uneven.
(Oh yeah, just to state the (now) obvious, Navratilova won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2)
Evert played very subpar (especially on her serve) and Navratilova
started to gag in the second set (her serve went way off, too).

One of the interesting things I did get to see was the Evert-Llyod
Kohde-Kilsch semifinal. At set point for Kilsch in the second set
tie-breaker, Evert hit a shot that (to me and most of the observers)
looked long but was called good. My question is this: what would you
have done if you were Evert (or in her position) if you knew the shot
was out? Would you give away a set by telling the umpire that the ball
really was out or would you just say "Hey, those are the breaks." like
Evert did? It seems to me that in THEORY that she should have said
"Hey, it was out, your point." if she knew it was out. To me,
this is kind of like the case of Ken Flach at the US Open (did the
ball touch him or not?). How far do people think good sportsmanship
should go?

I did find out that the Davis Cup final is going to be on ESPN this
year. It will be telecast live(!) from West Germany which translates
to a 4am starting time (for the west coast) on December 20th, 21st
and 22nd. I look forward to the matches, but on present form, the
West Germans don't have a chance. Willander is playing great,
Edberg is playing pretty well and Becker is not too hot (right now,
but that could change by the time the tie rolls around).

Oh yeah, before I forget, how about McEnroe at the Australian against
Zivojinonic? Pretty pathetic if you ask me. He basically tanked
the fifth set (losing it 6-0) and started yelling at 'Bo-bo'
"I'll make you pay for this, I promise!" How childish can you get?
What was Zivojinovic supposed to do? try to LOSE the match just because
he was playing the great John McEnroe?

Well, I hope this generates some more conversation. It seems to me
that this group goes in spurts. We get noisy for a while, then
quite down while the soccer/football and auto racing people take
over net.sport.
