The RA80 is an "intelligent" controller on the UNIBUS with a winchester type drive (R80). It is a UNIBUS device and there is a 4.1 VAX UNIX driver (by Bill Shannon) which one can get from Berkeley. There will be a version 7 driver soon. The controller fetches instruction packets from main memory and follows instructions. The controller has more buffering in it than the standard DEC disks.
