groups reissued :
Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Can, Amon Duul
TANGERINE DREAM- see other postong on electr, exptl, cosmic music
ASH RA TEMPEL - most if not all of their lps have been reissued in the
80's and some are available as overstocks. Klaus Schulze played on some
early ones. The ones that are group leader Manuel Gottsching
multitracked are recomended: "Inventions for Electric Guitar", "New Age
of Earth", and "Blackouts". The other lps are good (except for
"Correlations", which is like easy listening club music for the most
part). The "Seven Up" lp features Timothy Leary and some good space
jams on one side and basic blues rock interspersed with synth sound on
the other. "Starring Rosi" is the only one with a lot of songs rather
than lengthy instrumentals. "Ash Ra Tempel", 1st lp, is recommended for
fans of Hendrix and Pink Floyd. "Ash Ra Tempel" and "Join Inn" feature
Klaus Schulze on drums and synth and keyboards.
CAN - a sort of fusion group- very eclectic, sometimes rather free
improvization with spacey sections. Recomended: just about anything.
"Ege Bamyase" has some psychedelic blues jazz rock. "Monster Movie" and
earlier lps have more air of psychedelic rosk primitivism and some great
inspiration to go with it. "Vive La Trance" and "Soon Over Babaluma"
have more space sound and some more polished technique.
AMON DUUL-- pounding percussion and eclectic tribal jams
"This IS" chaotic collage of shock waves , jams with electronic cosmic
sound thrown in here and there with a couple familiar tunes utterly
destroyed by the chanters. Heavy guitar sound, folk rock, Velvet
Underground feel, and even some classical motifs. mind expanding!!
"Disaster" is not that much more listenable, but it doesn't have a skip
recorded right into the music as "This Is" does on side two.
"Experimente", "Collapsing", and "Para Dies Warts", and "Minilied" are
their other lps.
AMON DUUL II -- the commune split up in the early Seventies to form Amon
Duul and Amon Duul II. Amon Duul II is much more listenable, or not
nearly as challenging, which ever way you wish. Early AD II has good
space and eclectic jams. Some lps have a lot of pop/rock tunes.
OVERALL RECOMMENDATIONS
fans of Tangerine Dream might like Ash Ra Tempel's lps. partcularly "New
Age of Earth". Fans of Free form Improv should get the Can lps listed
above. Fans of early Pink Floyd might like early Ash Ra Tempel and early
Amon Duul II. If you want revenge on your roommates, play Amon Duul for
them LOUD. But I love Amon Duul, please don't get me wrong. Amon Duul is
like hardcore punk in some ways and stands on its own as experimental
music, also.
I would post more on Amon Duul II, but I am currently uncertain about
the availability of any of their lps right now.
Yes, even more from the Galaktik Arkivz
