[net.music] Diane Hood in L.A. unable to get thru via Arpanet

evan@petfe.UUCP (Evan Marcus) (05/20/85)

Sorry I had to post this to the net, but I was unable to write back via
ARPANET.

DIANE--MY STUFF IS IN CAPS. THANKS FOR WRITING.
I really enjoy your quizzes! I have some comments, though.

1) I am not sure these messages are getting through. I think I got
11 right on the quiz, but perhaps mine was one of the responses
lost, no matter. Could you send me a reply?

QUITE POSSIBLE THAT I LOST YOURS EARLY ON. SORRY 'BOUT THAT.

2) Re: Hey Girl by Freddie Scott. Since even knowing the answer to this
doesn't ring any bells for me, I have a further question. Remember
I looked the song up and there were several? Well, TWO were actual
hits that I can remember, and I will describe them. In one, the guy has
a high, whiney voice --- "Hey-ey girl, tell me what are you going to do?"
and he's basically crying because she's leaving him.
In the second, she's also leaving, but the background singers are
female and keep singing "Bye, bye baby", while the lead singer has a low
voice, sort of like Bill Medley (Righteous Bros.) and sings "Hey, Girl,
I want you to know-o-o, I'm goin' to be really messed up if you go" or
   similar words to that effect.
Which is the one you were referring to? (Be advised that L. A. has
several oldies stations that play these songs regularly. I don't know
how common oldie stations are in other parts of the country)
HERE IN NYC, THERE IS 1 FULLTIME OLDIES STATION (WCBS-FM), AND LOTS OF
RANDOMLY ARRANGED OLDIES SHOWS ON OTHER STATIONS, BOTH IN NYC, AND LOCAL.
I ACTUALLY LIVE DOWN ON THE JOISEY SHORE, BUT NYC RADIO GETS HERE EASILY.

WHILE I CAN'T THINK OF THE LYRICS TO HEY GIRL OFFHAND, IT IS A HIGH WHINEY
VOICE, AND THOSE MAY BE THE RIGHT LYRICS. HOW ABOUT: HEY GIRL, I WANT YOU
TO KNO-O-O-W HOW MUCH I'LL MISS YOU IF YOU G-O-O-O...AND THE BACKGROUND
SINGERS ARE DOING BYE BYE BABY...I THINK YOU HAVE THE SAME SONG BOTH TIMES,
NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT.
3) The new quiz has Magic twice? Same song? 2 different songs?
NO, MY ERROR. SORRY.

4) There might be two "Day After Day"'s, both early '70's. There's "No
matter what you do...", but there's also the one about California
falling into the ocean. "Day after day, more people come to LA, oops,
doncha tell any body the whole place slipping away. Where can we go, when
there's no San Francisco, ... tie up the boat in Idaho." But perhaps
I am mistaken as to the title of this second one.
WELL, I DON'T KNOW THE ONE ABOUT CALIFORNIA FALLING INTO THE OCEAN. THAT
MAY BE JUST A LOCAL HIT OR SOMETHING. THE VERSION I AM THINKING OF IS FROM
THE SAME GROUP WHO DID 'NO MATTER WHAT,' BUT IT IS A DIFFERENT SONG.

GLAD YOU ENJOY THE QUIZZES...I WILL KEEP THEM UP FOR AWHILE--THE RESPONSe
HAS BEEN MAH-VELOUS. IF YOU HAVE SONGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE INCLUDED, LET
ME KNOW, AND I WILL SEE IF I CAN.

THANKS FOR THE INTEREST...EAGERLY AWAITING YOUR ANSWERS...

"I'm not."
