[net.music] Maximum Louie Louie

Last year, as part of their `Month of Mayhem' programming, KFJC
played about 450 versions of Louie, Louie; some were published,
some were tapes that KFJC solicted for this extravaganza.
There were versions from such notables as Patti Smith and the
Dead Kennedys. Most were garage band stuff. The Rhino Records
anthology was culled in part from this massive number. I think
that a couple of other local college stations have done previous
`Louie, Louie' marathons (KUSF, maybe) but KFJC holds the current
record for most versions played. A very strange two days of programming.

They might send you a playlist if you contact them at:

Los Altos, Ca. (sorry i can't remember the zip)

Sorry, no UUCP address.

As I understand the story: It all started when two dj's at KFJC put
together all of the (easily) available versions of LL they could find--
something like 15-20 versions.

The station manager at KFJC, Robert "Doc" Pelzel, who is the ex-station
manager of KALX (Berkeley), passed the idea on to "The Amazing Mystery
DJ" at KALX. He then put together the first LL marathon.

I'm kind of foggy on details here. Either this first marathon, or a
later one (interspersed with a KFJC marathon) lasted around 15-20 hours.
KFJC finally put the record to bed with their Maximum-LL.

"The Amazing Mystery DJ" still does a LL-athon annually--usually around
12 hours I think. You can get a copy of the playlist by writing to:

	The Amazing Mystery DJ
	KALX-FM
	2311 Bowditch St.
	Berkeley, CA 94720

The KFJC Maximum-LL got a lot of national publicity--including a front page
story in the Wall Street Journal. Besides the many recorded versions, lots
of bands and artists--including Richard Berry and some of The Kingsmen--
stopped by to perform live versions.
