From: Frank J. Wancho <KGOODLOE@SIMTEL20.ARPA> We need some information on the difference between Unix 4.1 and Unix 4.2BSD. One particular concern is whether 4.1 supports virtual memory. Any information, or sources of information will be greatly appreciated.

From: Mike Muuss <mike@brl-vgr> Yes Frank, 4.1 BSD supports virtual memory. If you have the choice, though, use 4.2 BSD and not 4.1; 4.1 does not have any network support, and 4.2 is, overall, quite an improvement. -Mike

4.1 supports virtual memory, and while I am not a 4.2 or 4.1 expert, I would bet that 4.2 does everything 4.1 does, although differently. --Ray

"I would bet that 4.2 does everything 4.1 does, although differently." That's probably a fair statement, from the documentation we've seen so far. In fact, some of us would phrase it a little more strongly: "4.2BSD does everything UNIX does, but differently." Less rhetorically, when you look at 4.2, make sure you look at the 4.2 which is actually delivered, not the one that's been promised for the last year or two. Some major features slipped to 4.3 recently. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
