[net.unix] license for second CPU?

phil@amd70.UUCP (11/07/83)

I have a question about something that sounds like it should be illegal
but I can't find anything that says it actually is. This question should
not be taken as an indication that I plan to do it.

The cost to license a second CPU for System V is $16,000. I get quotes
for a binary license anywhere between $3,000 and $6,000. Suppose I get
a binary license for "AMDVAX". Would it be legal for me to make a copy
of the source code from "AMDCAD" (which does have a System V source license)
and place it on "AMDVAX" even though "AMDVAX" has a binary only license?
What if I promise never to compile the source code? :-)

I notice that the license agreement for V7 allows disclosure of the
licensed software to employees of the licensee, I assume System V is
licensed in a similar manner.

There's a section about not making copies which are not necessary to the
uses granted under the license, but I would think studying the source code
is a legitimate use.

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT ASKING THIS QUESTION ON AMD'S BEHALF, BUT OUT OF
MY OWN CURIOSITY.
