[net.unix] XENIX ON TRS-80 16B

From: Leslie Zatz <ZATZ@SUMEX-AIM.ARPA>

  I am planning on purchasing a 4 user TRS-80, Model 16B
system running XENIX with a 15 Mbyte internal hard disk and
a second 12 Mbyte external hard disk. Price is very reasonable. Will be used for text file searching - no math
or number crunching. Has anyone had experience with such a
system? Any problems? We will be ussing a program developed
on a VAX with UNIX 4.1bsd.

Thanks.

My experience with Xenix on the TRS-80 Mod 16 is that it is VERY SLOW.
No other problems; and this doesn't seem to be a problem with Xenix
in general. I would appreciate hearing your comments on this system,
esp. in regards to the speed (or lack thereof).

A couple of hours spent in a radio shack computer store in Chicago
a while back revealed the following:

	1. It's very s---l---o---w. I wonder what speed that processor
is chugging alog at? (Salesperson did not know.)

	2. It's not terribly robust; a C program consisting basically of
"while (1) fork();" blew it away. So did one that tried to open more
than the maximum number of files. Remember the "at" bug? It's there; so
are a lot of the other common bugs.

	3. The &%$ keyboard is missing the symbols for either [] or {}; can't
remember which offhand; and | becomes backslash. I don't recall all the
details, but it'd probably take a while to learn how to type on this thing.
Additionally, the keyboard feels like a damp sponge.

	4. I think I'll wait for Bell's machine.

A 1 megabyte 16B with the 12 meg drives can run fast enough
in its intended application: COBOL business software. Xenix
is a bit slow to do development under if more than one user
is on (or you have more than a few processes going). If you
treat it as a single user, multi task development system it
can be tollerable given its price and the available service.
