A person mentioned "Sytek" networking/multiplexing boxes. I feel the
obligation to say something about these boxes.

I have been underwhelmed by said devices. Although the ability to run
multiple sessions to multiple machines is nifty (and extremely handy,
I might add), the Sytek network has problems when the you start to push
the bandwidth. Instead of everything "slowing down" a tad, you LOSE
information.

I don't know what causes this: perhaps it's just my little [expensive]
box and not the network itself. I would advise you to consider this,
though.

ps. This is not to be construed as the opinion of my employer, but as
my own [biased] opinion. Please remember this.

I think that you probably have your SYTEK boxes set up wrong. We NEVER
lose information over ours. You do need flow-control at the host end,
though. You can either do this with ^S/^Q, or, of you have cooperative
hardware (e.g. Able DH/DM), with an out-of-band signal. The effective
throughput rate of the Sytek System 20 (terminal interface) box is about
9200 baud, according to our calculations. You should also check to make
sure that your system is well configured. There are a number of
parameters you can set, which, if set improperly, can slow down the
network quite a bit.

So, before you badmouth someone's equipment, make sure you have your
facts right.

You might also check and make sure your terminal can handle
the baud rate you're running at. Some of our terminals have a SMOOTH
SCROLL bug/feature. We found that when running at 19200 the terminal
couldn't send XON/XOFF's fast enough to keep up, even though the info
from the host machine was only comming at 9600. So in this case the
Sytek box was setup correctly and it was the terminal's fault!
