From: George Keller (IBD) <keller@brl> Is there a simple data-base program available in the public domain for use on UNIX machines? Our needs do not justify spending thousands of dollars. George

From: Doug Gwyn (VLD/VMB) <gwyn@brl-vld> INGRES comes with 4.2BSD and U.Toronto's MRS is available under license for a few hundred $$. Both are relational database systems, although MRS doesn't handle really large databases very well.

From: Paul Broome <broome@brl-bmd> George, I've heard a rumor that INGRESS, a relational system from Berkeley, is in the public domain. Local people that may know are Randy@amsaa or Howard@brl. Another alternative is CProlog, which is running locally on BRL-VGR. We could prossibly put it onto a VAX near you. In addition to being a programming language, Prolog is a relational database query language. You need a VAX for both INGRESS and CProlog. -paul

You do not absolutely need a vax for INGRES. We are running version 6.3 of INGRES on a pdp-11/44 running 2.8 BSD. It is not blindingly fast, however. Charles LaBrec UUCP: pur-ee!Physics:crl, purdue!Physics:crl INTERNET: crl @ pur-phy.UUCP
